Child: Daddy, better than nothing would be the worst thing in the world.

After a moment’s thought, though, I realised that she was exactly right. “x is better than nothing” = “x is not better than anything” = “x is at least as bad as anything else” = “x is the worst thing in the world”.
It’s the same idea as the old joke: A ham sandwich is better than eternal happiness, because nothing is better than eternal happiness and a ham sandwich is better than nothing.
